Bandung City Government Promotes Investment and Expansion of Job Opportunities
The Bandung City Government continues to push for various measures to expand job opportunities amidst labor-related challenges, including layoffs in West Java.
Key areas receiving attention include strengthening investment, facilitating ease of doing business, ensuring legal certainty, and improving the quality of human resources.
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stated that the current employment situation poses a challenge that requires serious attention.
West Java is facing a high number of layoffs as several manufacturing industries have ceased operations.
"West Java has the highest number of layoffs in Indonesia, as many manufacturing industries have closed down," Farhan said on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
On the other hand, Farhan views the growth of the informal sector—including digital-based work and the "gig economy"—as an emerging opportunity.
However, this growth does not diminish the importance of having formal job opportunities that offer quality employment and security for the workforce.
"We cannot simply rest easy; we still need formal employment, as it provides better job quality," he noted.
According to Farhan, ease of doing business and legal certainty are crucial factors in fostering the creation of formal jobs.
A conducive business climate is expected to attract investors, thereby opening up more employment opportunities.
"With ease of doing business and legal certainty, we hope investors will be encouraged to invest in Bandung and West Java, ultimately creating a wide range of job opportunities," he said.
Beyond promoting job creation, the government must also ensure that the workforce possesses competencies aligned with the needs of the business sector.
Consequently, education and training systems must equip graduates with additional skills—including soft skills—to better prepare them for the demands of the labor market.
The Bandung City Government is also exploring international cooperation, including collaboration with the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) and the potential utilization of a "sister city" arrangement with Hamamatsu, Japan. Through this initiative, employment opportunities for the workforce from Bandung in Japan can be further explored, supported by training provided by relevant ministries, alongside the Bandung City Government’s role in preparing human resources to meet specific requirements.
“These are the opportunities we continue to open up, in addition to job fairs—which are held not only in-person but also online,” said Farhan.
These various efforts are part of the Bandung City Government’s strategy to expand public access to employment opportunities while simultaneously enhancing the competence of the workforce, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the demands of the business sector—both nationally and internationally.
